the umbrellas of Ste Foy la Grande ! |
The streets have been decorated and the
mood is festive.
someone has been busy with these displays on balconies all along rue Victor Hugo |
The weekly thursday night marché
gourmand began this month and is so popular that the stall holders have been
running out of food by 8.30, but the music goes on until late.
chatting with friends |
when a few hundred people gather together for dinner, there's always enough wine, even if the food has run out ... |
The mairie provides the tables and
chairs all set up under the trees on the square overlooking the river. There
will be a series of performers providing music through the season – this week
it was “Purple Rock”, on other nights there will be jazz , blues, and even country.
– the french are very keen on their line dancing ! There is even a "country fair" scheduled for next month and enthusiasts will arrive dressed in western style shirts, cowboy boots and hats ready to dance the night away.
"Purple Rock" performing - not a big band but loud and rocking ! |
This week there was the usual choices of
steak, sausages and duck all served with frites
- not a lettuce leaf in sight. Then there was an ice cream bar, and
someone was offering crepes. This time I noticed the addition of a pâtissier (
pastries) and a fromagier (cheeses). And, of course, there were a couple of
local producers offering their wines.
fireworks over the river - always impressive |
As it was 14th July we all
gathered on the quai and the bridge to watch the Fête Nationale firework
display. As we have a large fireworks factory in the next village providing the performance , it's always worthwhile. It was only later that we heard
the news from Nice where friends who had just been with us only last month were
on that promenade caught up in the most horrific of nights.
During the summer there is also a vide grenier in Ste Foy on the 4th sunday of every month. With so many tourists in the area it was particularly busy this week.
It's vacation time in Europe, the sun is shining and there's entertainments to suit everyone. I'm looking forward to Jazz on the Quai opposite our house. Sitting by the riverside with a breeze to keep us cool and a supply of rosé while we enjoy the music sounds as good a way as any of spending a summer evening.....

It felt like everyone had come for the market |
