the band entertaining the waiting crowd |
The weather has been a bit gloomy but on Saturday
afternoon we went to the opening of the new Halle in Port Sainte Foy. It has been
built beside the boule courts by a group of apprentices from all over France .
There is a government sponsored program to give apprentices experience working
on community projects so that they learn about traditional building methods. The
commune supplied the materials, oak framing and terracotta roof tiles. The
Halle looks the same as market halles in villages all over this part of France,
just newer.

A couple of hundred locals gathered around the Halle double kissing and chatting to the
accompaniment of a local band. Then monsieur le maire ( the mayor ) cut the
tricolor ribbon and declared the Halle open. After his speech thanking all
those on the organising committee, then another speech thanking each of the
apprentices and their supervisors, the Halle was officially launched with free
wine for all and lots of music to keep the party bouncing along.
