Lake Garda and Mantua

the italian lakes

We picked up a car in Bologna and drove north to our farmstay outside of Mantua. Since we had made no plans for the afternoon we decided to drive to Peschiera del Garda on the southern shore of Lake Garda, less than an hour away. The sun was shining, people were messing about on their boats, or cycling along the waterfront, or just sitting in the sunshine enjoying a drink. After a short walk we opted for the latter and another Aperol spritz.

Loved the mountainous surroundings and the relaxed mood and have resolved to return for a longer drive around the Italian lakes district. There is much here to discover.

Al Fugular agriturismo and restaurant

the farmer's house

We had chosen to spend a couple of nights at a farmstay because they often have a restaurant and we wanted to try the local specialities. The family at Al Fugular were very welcoming and our limited Italian and their lack of English didn’t pose any problems. At a discussion at breakfast we explained that we were hoping for some local dishes.  They asked what in particular we wanted and we said we had heard of tortellini en brodo  and ravioli con zucca. So, while these dishes were not on the menu for Saturday night, the chef (mrs farmer) made them especially for us. Very kind and thoughtful people, and the food was delicious.

The ‘old town’ of Mantua is medieval and renaissance. It is surrounded by man made lakes which were created for defence. There are a number of squares and beautiful buildings and we spent a wonderful day discovering these. As this town is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, obviously many others agree that this is a place to visit.

we know someone who can never have enough hats !

footpaths are for dining, not for walking

In Shakespeare's play, Romeo was banished to Mantua....not really a punishment.

And on to Modena..
